For Sale: 1974 GTV $14,999.-

I am finally at peace with myself and offering my 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV to a fellow enthusiast willing to spend $14,999.-(OBO) ($25,000 if someone insists to reimburse me for all the money I put into the car over the years). I have owned this car (as the third owner as I understand) since 2003 (along with another two-seater). Now with a wonderful family of four I just don’t have the time and opportunities anymore to enjoy it to its full extent. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

The car spent its entire life prior to my ownership in California except when it moved with its previous owner to Maryland for less than two years, where I eventually found it (on eBay) and took over. Since then the car followed me from Arkansas back to my home in Seattle. I have driven the car exclusively in dry weather (except when I got caught in rainstorms during long distance adventures halfway across the country). It was always protected from the elements in dry garages, storage units, or carports. If you are still with me you won’t regret reading on….

The car has roamed 230,000 miles on US roads since first sold, the last 30,000 with rebuilt engine and transmission (in 2004), which happened during my ownership and for which I have receipts for – mild performance upgrade through "hotter" cams were done by the previous owner. It also had already upgraded brakes and Koni shocks. I have records for almost all parts and repairs for the time I have owned it the car. Since then the following list of restored and repaired items includes:

- Totally overhauled ignition system including Bosch performance distributer, electronic ignition, new alternator, coil, and rebuilt starter;

- Cooling system was overhauled with re-cored radiator, new fan and shroud, and new hoses;

- New tan (original color) naugahyde interior including front and back seats, and door panels (in 2005) – still looks like new;

- Re-spray in original color in 2005. Minor surface rust issues were addressed and taken care of at this point. The car was transferred to a more European exterior style, most trim was replaced with new parts such as badges, front grill, side view mirrors etc. Lighting was upgraded with Hella halogen lights and yellow Bosch fog lights were installed to complete the European look;

- New clutch in 2005;

- Coated exhaust manifolds and Stebro stainless steel performance exhaust system – it just sounds amazing;

- Later Daytona style wheels replaced the steelies;

- A lot of other interior items such as arm rests, interior lighting, map pockets, lenses, drive shaft, Nardi steering wheel (leather) etc. were refurbished or replaced with new or as-new parts as the years went by, a period correct Becker Mexico cassette radio was fitted, and the instrument pod showing Kph and Mph came from a British GTV.

- And so on and on and on….

Here are things I planned next for the car:

- Install the correct-year Spica fuel injection pump (it currently runs flawlessly with a later year model), which I already have and which is sitting at Wes Ingram’s shop waiting for my (your?) go-ahead to rebuild and install it. By the way: Wes when he saw and drove the car after he did a FI adjustment found it to be well above average (I have his assessment in writing);

- Replace the original headliner (some staining and a few smaller tears), although somebody could still live with the old one…;

- And that would be it for somebody who wants to drive and enjoy the car in excellent (visually and mechanically) daily driver condition, either as a daily driver or weekend touring car.

The car has always been maintained to a very high standard to keep it in solid and totally reliable daily driver condition. I did all listed repairs and upgrades in the sense of preventative maintenance and restoration while driving and enjoying the car. I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere (Except… as I said, I now have a family of four)!

The car is located in Seattle, WA, and comes with a clean title. If you are interested, have questions, or want to arrange for seeing the car please contact me. Only serious buyers please - don’t waste my and your time. The car is sold as-is with no warranties.

Thank you fangio8c.
It is not the car that wins you a concours, but it sure makes you smile and proud to own everyday and everytime you look at it or drive it. Like so many before me, I'd never thought it would come to this (putting the car up for sale), but time has come to move on and to pretend being a responsible Hubby and Daddy - And maybe get a four door Guilia saloon instead.... You can't give up and in entirely, right?!

I feel your pain. You will come out the other side and it will be okay.

I would not give up my Alfa addiction easily when the family came along. Sent my Duetto off to restoration and bought a 164S telling my wife that Pasquale and Tino would be right there at Alfa of Bellevue to fix anything that I couldn't handle (which turned out to be alot on that car). A few months later they bought the Ferrari franchise and moved to Seattle. Now that's a long tow across the lake and the hook fees really added up. Not what you want with a young family.

Now that one child is in college, I'm itching to get the Duetto finished and I'm looking for a street/track GTV.

Family first, Alfas second (not by much somedays). Good luck, and see you on the other side.

Well, sportivo1, college is still 15 years away for my boy, so I'm potentially facing a long time of inner uproar. It's funny, because like you, I also have a Duetto (all original, mechanically in perfect daily driver condition, just the interior and paint - and what may be creeping underneath it - need some refreshing) that I'm planning to hold on and use for those hopefully plenty of special days where I just want to hang out with my son or my wife or myself (You see: there is no "and"....) and enjoy something that not many cars on this planet can give you anymore: Not driving from A to B but living between A and B... Too many hours wasted everyday anyway, so why not win back those that we have to spend in a car ;-)

More pix

I attached a few more pictures taken during my regular fluid and filter check this week. Everything was planned out perfectly: Since I know how much we like pictures, I thought that this is a great opportunity to get some pixs from the underside of the car. Well the car was on the lift, but the camera batteries gave up on me as I just got started. Anyway here is what I got plus a few more that I took on that day while waiting for the check-up. If somebody needs an independent inspection of the car and/or if you are out of town, please feel free to have a person you trust check out the car, or you can also check in with Group2Motorsports here in Seattle who did all the maintenance work (and occasional repair) on the car over the last few years. Great and very knowledable guys. Ask nicely for Chris or Joe - They are not aware that I am about to drag 'em into this.... But I really trust them and they will give you an honest assessment of the car.
Thanks,
Klaus Winkler

And a few from the underside

The jack points in the pictures are located on the driver's side - rear and front, respectively. Then the camera died...

Klaus: Greetings. I'm a former GTV owner, ('73 2000), and live here on the eastside. I saw your car on Craigslist originally, and then stumbled upon it here (I just registered today). I'm not in the market--still have two at the UW and one in the queue--but maybe someday. Even though I'm not seriously looking, I hope you don't mind answering a few questions about your GTV:
1) Is the rectangle on the dash a patch? (I know it's not an air bag...) My dash cracked in roughly the same place one cold morning in Tahoe; 2) Is that moss on your vent wing window? Do you not open the vents? I recall they are notorious for stripping; 3) Is the sheet metal below the front bumper rough on all GTVs? I can't recall for sure, but I think mine was too.

Thanks in advance, and good luck.

1 - The dash is covered with a dash cap, as you can buy them through several AR parts suppliers, and was done by the previous owner. I really don't know what it looks underneath it and, frankly, I never cared too much about it since the cap is in excellent condition. The rectengular patches you noticed in the pictures are just sticky pads (but they are not glued to the dash - sort of electros-static, I guess) that you can buy these days so that your cell phone, i-pod etc. is not sliding all over your dash (They actually work great and come in very handy when you own an older car that does not have al these pockets and storage trays new cars come with today).
2 - The vent windows on both sides were "siliconed shut" by the previous owner. If I recall correctly he did it because they never seemed to seal right and caused annoying wind noise when driving the car on the freeway. What you see in the picture is not mold but some discolored silicon that he used for this. Based on some "playing" around with the vent knobs, it appears that th eoperating mechanism works fine. It's also something that never really bothered me. Speaking of windows: The passenger side window only opens one third down (This happened overnight). I tried to troubleshoot (although this bothered me, I never got around to fix it though), and it seems that it is caused by some tangled, maybe worn out wire inside in the roll-up mechanism.
3 - Honestly, it looks worse in the picture than it really is. In my opinion - unless you were looking for a show car or a ground-up body restoration or cars that have the bumpers removed - you would be hard pressed to find one with perfect sheet metal at this location.

Welcome to this board and I hope you have a chance some day (soon) to own and drive one again - By the time I will return to the market (let's say 15 years from now) a car similar in condition to mine will be probably so out of my price range it will not be even funny anymore....

Klaus.... Regards. I wanted to know if the car is still for sale? I am thinking of selling my 1965 Austin Healey 3000 and picking up a Alfa. My first Alfa!

Tony:
Good news: The car is still for sale.
I know from a friend of mine who owns an Austin Healey, that - as beautiful and exciting the car is - it lacks the practicality and (everyday) useability of an Alfa Romeo of the same time period. I can only speak for the AR-cars I know, but a GTV (or Duetto for that matter) can easily keep up with modern traffic and, because of their beautifully working engines and 5-speed transmissions, can be driven almost like a modern car (minus cupholders, AC ... and these sort of things), and get better gas milage than most of the newer cars as an additional plus. In my opinion, they are the perfect classic cars to own, if you want to enjoy and drive one regularly. And I have experienced them to be very reliable (It's really not that difficult to stay on top of regular maintenance, which is critical to accomplish this reliability - I have never ever been towed to a mechanic in either of my Alfas). An old Alfa mechanic once told me, driving an Alfa is using all your senses: smell them, listen to them, feel them, watch their gauges - and you will always know how they are doing and what they may need. Sounds kind of esotheric but it was true for me. And I always considered this as part of the excitement of owning and driving these phantastic Italian cars. It actually lets me participate.... Can't say that from my '00 Mazda and '05 Ford...

Well, I wish you good luck for the sale of your Austin and would love to see you in an Alfa soon. And if you choose mine for your first - You would not regret it! - just contact me through this board or call me at 206-909-5551.

Thanks,
Klaus
