69 Gtv

I am considering selling my '69 Euro GTV project. I bought it about two years ago in Europe, knowing it needed a full restoration. I drove it around for about a year and a half, because I just loved driving it, and could not afford a restoration due to a job change. Then late last year, I decided to bite the bullet, and started stripping her. I just don't see how I'm going to get to the restoration part anytime soon though, unless I really start doing what folks like bill, Rossano, Daveydog and Gigem and others just dove right into....learning how to form metal and weld.... I just don't see having the capabilities nor the time....and I want to start clearing my garage in case I need to downsize to a less expensive home. Sorry for the long winded intro, but I would really hate to sell this car, as I've been longing for one for many years, and I finally got my favorite, 69 Euro....

I know you'll want pictures, but for now, here are the details

69 Euro, with very nice black Euro flying buttress seats (as in only one with headreast...need some stithing in the back of one seat, but VERY nice overall

Black exterior, original color AR501 red

Nice European Stilo wheels

Nice straight bumpers

Dash could use new veneer, but top only has very minor cracks

2 liter alfetta engine. Was said to be rebuilt about 25000 miles ago, but leaks oil, probably rear seal....needs to come out anyway

slight 2nd gear crunch

Rust...you need to assume replacing the rockers, some wheel arch rust, bottom of doors, and floors etc. Probably some hiding around the windows in the usual spots, but does not look too bad

There are some pictures here:

http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/gt-1...oration-2.html

All in all, a complete car, but it needs to be stripped further and restored. I'm trying to get a feel for a price point....I realize I won't be getting back what I have into it, but for someone looking for a euro 69 project, this may just be the tikcket

Hi Peter, its a pity re perhaps the need to sell your project but I do understand as have at times wondered if I too should sell my '69 series 1 1750 GTV. But as long as I don't have to I won't.

While yours is partially stripped down it is not too far gutted for a potential buyer to be confident of re-assembling it. And that actually should be helpful for any keen restorers. Ditto the condition of your car doesn't look too bad, for as you would be aware of all those other projects of Rossano, Pete's and Daveydog let alone others posted on the BB, there have been many rustier than yours.

Mine is on par with yours (bar the flaking rubbish white paint on mine) except for the bottom of the rear arches, but the doors on mine are toast, as ditto the boot lid (trunk). Hence the need to acquire "new" un-rusty items. Still need to get a LHS door.

Just one thing if your car is a Euro '69 model, than the bumpers appear to be those for a series 2 (that is squared off and with over-riders). Maybe also a carry over from the black paint job and Berlina grill etc ???

Goodluck with the sale, the price seems ok to me, but if you can hang onto it, that too would be nice. Dave

I hear you on the bumpers, almost seems like a transition model, rear bumpers are S2 also ,but it's got standing pedals, S1 interior, everything. BTW, comes with a brand new correct grille

69 Euro GTV for sale

OK, it looks like the current market is not supporting my $5K asking price....what should it be? $4K? I realize I won't get back what I have into it, but come on, it is a nice project! I am getting offers to buy parts, and would probably be better off parting her out, but I don't want to see another GTV bite the dust, she's too nice for that!

Peter:

A few random thoughts:

- I am not a prospect for buying your car, and have no idea if $5K is too high or low.

- Are you promoting it beyond the BB? Craigslist, ebay? Reaching a wider audience might help you locate a buyer. I am constantly amazed at the prices some ebay auctions bring (both high and low). You might list it with a $4,500 reserve, and see what happens.

- Unfortunately, your car is partially disassembled, not running, and dirty. By disassembling it, you have exposed its rust problems. And, you don't want to sell it piece-by-piece. In other words, you are presenting it at its worst. I'm certainly not criticizing you - you're being very honest, and obviously you respect this car. But, it does have a lot of strikes against it.

- Keep in mind that if the car were still assembled/running, had its rust holes stuffed with newspaper, Bondo'd over, and painted rattle can black, the typical ebay seller would call it "fully restored", and get $12,000. Now is this honest, am I advocating it? Heck no. But, be aware that this is what your prospective customers are buying instead.

- My advice would be to let it go as-is for "best offer" if you want to see it gone quickly. Or get it running again so that you can sell it as a driver (of course, disclosing all of its "warts") if you want a bit of a project. Or bite the bullet and part it out if you can tolerate a longer-term project, and the pain of seeing its stripped carcass.

thanks for your comments Jay. I do realize that I'm not doing a great job presenting the car, but I just hate being dishonest about it, and I don't want to make it look nicer than it really is....the PO did this to me, to a certain extent.
I guess putting her back together would generate more interest and a higher price, but it just doesn't seem right to put her back together without addressing the issues......I knew what I was getting into when I started the project, just didn't know that my financial situation would be where it is right now.
I know there are other ways to sell her, but I really wanted to try and find a home within this nice community....all the more reason to be very upfront about the condition, I would like to be able to show my face here after the sale!
I guess I might try eBay next
