Considering the majority of people within the US hardly knows what Alfa Romeo is, I would say your point is moot... Ok im guessing you want examples... I was hoping i wouldnt have to.. heh.
McLaren, I would bet 99.9% of all people on this earth would not know how successful a racing team/builder Mclaren has been, but ask most young men (the primary market for sports cars) what is the fastest car on the planet? and the answer will be a resounding, McLaren F1... (well for about 16 years)
now you may ask, sure but what does that have to do with actual sales, considering that car is already known to have cost more to make then it was sold for... hmm a boost in the F1 racing team, a very well known and profitable relationship with Merc? sound familiar? yes SHOWPIECES do work.. otherwise very smart people would not spend a lot of money to make them.
are we done now? heh

If I may chime in with a slightly negative comment about the 8C...
The McLaren F1 was the best of the best (with a BMW engine no less), while the Alfa 8C is basically a rebodied Maserati, with a Maserati/Ferrari Engine, built by Maserati, if anything it is only a showcase for Centro Stile, not Alfa. Performance wise it is still not that amazing compared to a 430 Ferrari.
I still think Alfa should have built a 911 fighter with an Autodelta 3.7 V6 (using up the last of their Arese stock) and a similiar price tag, keeping the styling of course, using only Alfa resources to showcase Alfa's know-how and not Maserati's.

But it should be EUR 20-30k cheaper all in that an F430, with comparable performance, and much more exclusive.

Its not that Alfa dont built cars we like. Its part of Fiat group, they cant make just what they want. Group is keepin Ferrari and Maserati over Alfa brand, thats really shame. Best hint is that 8C engine when used in Ferrari it will scream up to 8500 rpms and now only 7500. That isnt good thing to have similar sports marques in same group IMO. Audi is destroying also Lamborghini bit by bit. If they put that V10 to R8 its clearly Lambos area, R8 is also based on Gallardo.

Looks like they have the car they need, didnt realize there are 2 sportivo's.. One being in red. Believe its in private collection though, when Alfa decides to do its marketing campaign in the US, just contact me for ideas.. heh

Mr. Krinkle, Wow they seriously took the front side panels for the 8C from that car there. That is a beautful car. Here Here!

There actually was a Sportiva spider too. I believe the red coupe is the car that was traded by the Alfa Museum years ago for the last known remaining car of an early type.

from CAR magazines website;
It's a world exclusive for the explosive new issue of CAR magazine, on sale from 1 November. The 8C Competizione is an Alfa that will cost over £100k and out-punch its own brothers from Ferrari and Maserati. A year before it goes on sale and ages before any other magazine on the planet, CAR gets a drive…
