You can throw a rag over the head with the rocker cover off and run the engine with the cams in if you like, it reduces the oil spray quite a lot.
Not sure checking at cranking speed will show too much. If the cam bearings weren't being adequately lubricated, you'd for sure see signs of it on the head.
