Okay, finally had a sunny day and so I pulled the passenger's side wheel off and then unscrewed the panel to expose the side of the engine. It was making some horrible metal scraping noise and so I discovered that the water pump wheel was rubbing against the main crankshaft wheel. It still doesn't describe the large coolant leak or does it? The PO had the timing belt done just before I bought it (@ 111k miles) and normally one would do the water pump also?
