It's amazing how many patents they filed in the US. Try entering "Alfa Romeo" into the Google Patent Search site...bunches and bunches are returned.
This is kinda cool, a predecessor to the airbag I am sure. An arresting net kinda of like before tail hooks on aircraft carriers.
