I was watching an episode of "Fifth Gear" (a UK motoring show) about a week ago, and they had a segment where they described a 1980s-era 911 as the "best bang for the buck" sportscar. Affordable (you can get a good one for £10,000), sporty, and reliable enough to be your everyday car. They said as a side-comment that Ferraris were the better sportscar, but were really only practical as a weekend car.
I have been lusting after a 911 for longer than I can remember. I've been trying to convince my fiancee that she should trade in her Golf for one (she wants an Audi TT - talk about a hopped up VW )
