That 91 was likely RON, not PON, and even if it was talking PON, that veedub was air cooled which has a significantly higher running temperature at/in/on the head which would very likely require a higher octane to prevent detonation regardless of compression.

Air cooled vs water cooled isn't a really an equal or even representative comparison truth be told. :shrug:
