Better fuel economy is achieved by minimizing use of the brakes!
BMW proved years ago that "jack rabbit" starts save fuel, not the reverse that is usually claimed. BMW even designed an engine dubbed eta as a result of these research results. Full throttle starts save fuel because although more fuel is used per unit of time less fuel is used in total. This is because the engine is not throttled so runs more efficiently at full throttle. The full throttle is used for a lot less time than part throttle for acceleration to the same cruising speed so the net result is less fuel consumed.
Diesel engines would show much less benefit from full throttle starts as these are not throttle controlled but fuel controlled.
