If I understand your question right, no. The soft top must b down for the hard top to go on, but you do not have to remove the soft top to put the hard top on. I store my Alfa in the winter but still us my hardtop during the early spring and the fall... It's also nice to have bit of a change....

As to those brackets behind the doors you mentioned velocedoc, I'll have to make a search to see what those look like. I thought there were brackets behind the door because I see where they screw into the hardtop, but I've never had them to use ....
