1989 model, 4 speed auto.

I know I should have changed the tranny fluid last year when I got the car (it was starting to turn black) but I was so happy I got it registered I just drove it.

Then, it started making a sharp noise with a clunk when changing up.

Then, one day when it was hot, it forgot how to change out of first but fixed itself.

Then, the other day, it forgot to change out of first until I backed off, then it lost drive altogether until stopped, when it found first again (drove home at 6000rpm which was kinda cool).

I'm not sure where to start - I guess I'll flush the fluid and change the filter first and see what happens - I have a new filter handy. It doesn't seem like it fits the failure modes detailed in this thread though - unless leaking governer seals would cause this problem (fingers crossed).
