My all-time favorite route is to take California Highway 140 from Mariposa into Yosemite, then Highway 120 (Tioga Pass) over to H-395. It has to be done early in the morning, before the motorhomes get rolling, but nothing beats sunrise on Tioga Pass.
Fuel is not available for a very long stretch at odd hours, so beware.
Highway 1 is wonderful, but there's so much traffic these days I've found it almost impossible to find stretches that allow an Alfa to do its thing. Same goes for old favorites like Skyline, Bear Creek Road, and other former Santa Cruz Mountain haunting grounds.
I'll really date myself. When I used to risk life and limb on the latter roads, my 1959 Giulietta Spider was only 8 years old, and there was practically no traffic. Prior to the Alfa, I defied common sense and gravity in a hot-rodded 1957 Plymouth.
