GTV6: Hydraulic (de)tensioner question

I rebuilt the tensioner seems to work OK and not leak.

Noticed a flapping noise coming from the front of the engine that sounded like the timing belt hitting the covers.

Huge amount of play in the timing belt between the cams.

The spring that keeps tension had come off the shaft it attaches to. The circlip had disappeared. Checking the shaft I cannot see a groove for the circlip to clip into. Is that right? It just grips the shaft?

I may not be making sense here but any input appreciated.

Any other way to secure the spring from falling off the shaft?
