this is normal - it is just missing the tubing.. its a pain to fit another tube though as the attachment is square shape

The 2 little elbows at each side on top of the air box have no hoses connected to them and one is blocked off with a little plastic cap. I need to get this all sorted out as i want to get my car working to its best after spending all this money on her. I know these questions have probably been asked before but i am desperate for advice on my final stage of getting the cold air to get into the airbox.
the elbows are supposed to have a pipe on each running to a plastic collector at the bottom/back of the airbox near the oil filler neck... its designed to feed oil vapour from the engine upto the elbow - then into the carbs and through - part pollution control.. on my car there were no plastic ends in the elbows but a metal insert that screws in - the tube attaches to this... you could change this and run some sort of catch can arrangement instead (although technically this might get u defected)

My mechanic reckons because i am getting hot air into my airbox it is causing my spark plugs to foul up and burn oil.
that doesnt sound logical. have you got the right plugs in? try ngk 6 instead of 7's that might help with the fouling... either that or the carbs are not tuned right. my car ran fine for years without a direct cold air feed - as do many older carbd cars

I know all i need is soon tubing to go from the square box to beside the passenger side headlight behind the grill to get cold air into the airbox, where do i get this tube and is it a special kind of material?
nothing special just go to a place like clark rubber or similair. depending on the size of pipe it should cost about 20$

but what about the 2 elbows on top of the air filter lid, are they supposed to be blocked off or i noticed on most pictures that they have hoses coming from them and they disappear behind the engine, where do they connect 2???????????
they are part of the emmisions crap that came on allot of the cars. from memory they fed vapour from a carbon canister...dont worry about them - plug them up - cork will work if u cant get the rubber inserts. once you've done that it wont be sucking in unfiltered air !
