OH! The 'inside' door handle. I have one with the slotted screwdriver type end and the other is an allen head set screw.

At the worst, it cost's $19.95 for a new door handle. So, if you just drill through the top, destroying the thing, you can replace it for 20 bucks.

I hate those kind of problems. The PO on my car had the ultimate solution. That shaft is so bugggered up by the Vice Grip, I might have to replace the inside guts to install a new shaft.
