I'll buy into this one. Living in the NT of Australia when there were no speed limits on the open roads I've owned and run both 2L (DellOrtos) and 2.5L (L-Jet) Alfetta coupes. Cruising at 100mph (160-180KPH) in high temps and high humidity made very little difference to the economy of either car. I think 4K rpm in both the 4 and V6 is quite economical as it's around the peak torque area.
Heavy use of the throttle (open/close) seems to have more impact on economy than constant high speed at stable throttle openings.
