as far as i'm aware the hand throttle is for keeping the enging idling while the car is warming up on cold mornings. a kind of substitue for an automatic choke.

watch out though - as the engine warms up the revs will increase exponentialy. more than once i have started the car, realized i have forgotten something inside, set the idle at 1500 rpm or so, gone back inside to get whatever i forgot, and come back to find the car almost redlining!

on a related point, people from the alfa club have told me the choke on these cars shouldn't be used as it is bad for the 105 engines to run so rich when starting up.
