I know it was only a joke. But UK and the countries it "settled" drove on the left for sword fighting , knives, sabres etc as most of the population is generally right handed. The US had firearms so the natural tendency would be to keep the approaching horseman to your left for a better shot. Napoleon was left handed and insisted his troops follow his method of keeping an approaching horseman to his left. Thus the tendency for Europeon countries to drive on the right. And thus endeth the history lesson for the day.
