Have you tried opening one of these things? Last time I did it was many years ago, but the old technology stuff was a bi-metal strip and a few contacts. The bi-metal strip heats up and due to the variance in expansion rates the strip bends and contacts, cools and returns. This is repeated and it causes to the lights to flash. So there is not that much that can go wrong. If my memory is correct then either the strip has broken or the contact is dirty. Best thing to clean contacts is alcohol on a piece of printer paper.
