I have always tested them in the same sort of way as Richard. Most of the time you can have the car in the air and spin one wheel as fast and as quickly as you can and it will make the limited slip grab and force the other wheel in the opposite direction with a pretty good bump. Most of the time you will know for sure doing this but not always.
