yep, when the other guy has 900! 
Reality is that they made the right call in canning that engine. 
The 4 cyl configuration was past it already. Ferrari already had a decent V6 engine in the family - would have been better to badge engineer that. By the time Alfa would have had the 4 running right the other engines would have been completely out of touch and we would have had another half hearted Alfa F1 effort (ala 3.0 flat12, 3.5 V10) to 'what if' about.
