Always a good idea to take a look in vehicles that have sunken spare tire wells every once in a while in the event water accumulates even if it hasn't done so in the past.
I also noticed that water will get into the spare tire well from washing the vehicle. There is a split on the weather seal is at the bottom of the trunk and spraying water from a hose can easily breach the split and end up at the bottom of the well.
