All I know about 856013 is that it was originally delivered to France and owned by Jean-Pierre Esquirol for a long time. I understand he is a well-known Alfisti, so I give him the benefit of the doubt that he knows what he's talking about and had some kind of documentation when he mentioned Conrero in conjunction with his 2600 SZ. I was unsuccessful in trying to contact him through another Alfisti in France -- so I could never really ask him about any of these claims.
There is something I find peculiar about 856013, and that has to do with the fact that it is an early car. According to my records was the 9th car completed by Zagato and consigned to Alfa on 28-Jul-65. The Alfa sale date is shown as 11-Nov-65 to Soc. Francaise Alfa Romeo - Paris.
By comparison, 856014 (the 12th car completed) is recorded as being the Alfa Demonstrator car for giving the press test drives in Italy. Interestingly, this car was consigned to Alfa on 14-Sep-65 (two weeks later than 856013).
As I have been tracking 2600 SZ cars for a while now, and I would love to know what the engine number of this car is. I believe the engine number may also give us a hint about whether or not Conrero may have had his hands on it if it falls inside or outside the normal number range for these cars. Now, given that there seems to be some documentation (Conrero invoice), you can probably imagine how much I would love to see a copy of this document.
Such a document may answer the question, why a car that was sold to France had a Conrero engine, but no such claims exist for cars in Italy. It also may answer my question why there would be a Conrero engine in a 2600 SZ but no such claims exist for 2600 Sprints, which were raced successfully in various events during 1964 (pretty much a year earlier).
Either way, Conrero mystery aside, I'm glad to hear 856013 still exists and somebody is figuring out how to take care of it. I'll be happy to assist any owners of these cars. I'm traveling a fair bit during the next 6 weeks, but please feel free to contact me offline (preferably via e-mail through the AlfaBB messaging interface) and we can exchange some additional information with respect to these cars.
