That extra notch in your bellhousing

Man that's weird! Did the notch look like it was cut with a saw, or like it was broken out by an impact? I'm going to guess the former, because it looks too rectangular to be the result of an accident. Isn't it odd how previous owners butcher up our cars? Someone should outlaw previous owners' right to posess power tools.
I am trying to guess what possible purpose might be served by enlarging the throw-out fork hole in that direction. I have heard of cutting a hole at the bottom of the bellhousing, and re-positioning the pivot, to allow a 2 liter bellhousing and clutch to work in an earlier chassis with a mechanical clutch - but that doesn't seem to be what your PO did. Probably he just got a new Sawzall for Christmas, and had to try it out.
