side spear
by the time I acquired my 2600, it had lost the side spears and had
stick-on "replacements"
1. what is the general width of the spear?
2. is it uniform in width along it's length?
3. can anyone post photos?
It seems to be one of the "un-obtainables". Haeckner lists them, but replied to my email with a negative on actually getting any.
Thanks
David

I'll have to measure the spears for exact dimensions. They are made of relatively thin stainless steel. Here are some pictures of what the profile looks like at both ends.

I have been told the spears off a 1963 Chevy are very similar, but have not actually checked..

Curious if anyone has found a replacement for the original side spears, or perhaps has had some made?

There's a company in Switzerland that has them listed. Don't recall the name, but with a little research you'll find them. If you don't turn up the name, let me know as I have the link on my computer at work.

I visited the Oldtimer site, and they no longer seem to have the side spear listed. It was 102.04.59.105.00 - for the Roadster, not the 102.05 number shown above as for Sprint. It was not cheap, but I'm suddenly wishing I had bought one while they had them listed. Hopefully they've got one or two left. The picture shown in their ad was clearly for the Roadster, not sprint.

Hi All,
I am going to make NEW reproductions side spears of the 2600 and 2000 touring spider.
in polished stainless steel , the only difference will be the inside mounting to chassis .
I prefer not to use the bolts and nuts but going to use double-side foamtape or PU cement to mount it on the car so no dust ,sand, water and corrosion comes between them.
The outside will be exact as original , the inner nobody sees........
The price I don't have yet ,depends on how many sets I can make,
shipping and packaging will be expensive , I live in The Netherlands
Do someone have interest ?

yes I have an interest. Actually packaging (wrapping, box etc.) may be more expensive than shipping. The challenge is to make the packaging strong enough so the spear cannot bend. Once they are bent they are almost useless.
I think attaching the spears to a piece of wood placed inside a PVC pipe of a suitable diameter might work.

Protection is certainly an issue, but so are dimensions: International post services usually do not accept parcels with one dimension exceeding 150 cm (about 60 inches) even if length+girth does not exceed 330cm (about 130 inches). This may require creating a box in which the spears are diagonally inserted.

I've seen the 2600 side spears (stainless steel) listed in the Re-originals catalog - NOT inexpensive, of course. I might be interested in a pair if you make some, Franco, so when you calculate the costs for fabricating, packing and shipping, will you please post the total on this thread? A PM is OK too.
Thanks,
Joe
