Pirelli 165 HR 400 vintage tires
FYI: A posting in the Yahoo 2000/2600 newsgroup started a discussion on tire options, which quickly became a discussion of Pirelli vintage tires.
Here are some pictures of the 165 HR 400 vintage tires available from Pirelli. These tires are mounted on a 2600 Touring Spider with Borrani 3906 wire wheels with a 5J - 400 dimension. The pictures were taken at the Alfa meeting in Sinsheim, Germany. Unfortunatley, I wasn't able to talk to the owner about the performance of these tires.

Are these the old 82-section tyre? I seem to recall that the 155/82-15 Pirelli Cinturato was available from Re-Originals but the annual production is now tiny. My father tried for a long time to find some Pirelli Cinturato 205-15 tyres with the correct sidewall height for his Iso Grifo (also original equipment for Ferrari Daytonas) but apparently the moulds are now lost.
Alex.

Alex, the link above shows the vintage tires that supposedly are currently available. I say "supposedly" because nobody I asked was able to confirm it. The tires at Reoriginals are on backorder -- really meaning they are available on request (i.e. they order after you order).
I can understand that your dad faces an uphill battle regarding tires for the Iso Grifo. A German Veith-Pirelli brochure (from about 1968) confirms that Cinturato 205 HR 15 and 205 VR 15 tires were used on the Grifo LGL 300 and LGL 365 on 6L x 15 rims. It also indicates these tires were used on Ferrari 330 GT, 330 GT coupe, 400 Superfast and 400 Super America (on 5½K x 15 rims), as well as on Maserati 4000 4 porte and 5000 GT (no rim size given).

In the latest issue of the German magazine "Oldtimer Markt" August 2006, is there an article about tires for cars.
I copied, sorry for the quality, the site that's contains the dimensions that has relation to most Alfas. It should be an updated list of what is available on the market to day with producers name

Pirelli 165 HR 400 vintage tires
I ordered five new Pirelli Cinturato 165-400 from Musko racing in Soest, Netherlands in March of this year. They arrived last week. The tires were made in 2006 using old dies.

Klaas, it's good to see you back on AlfaBB. Can you share with us how much these tires cost in Europe?

Those Pirelli tires do NOT pass the US Department of Transportation rules, so you are forced to use Michelin 165 or 185 x 400. Colker here in the US carries both sizes, but NOT the 175 x 400 (these are not available)

Last time I checked, the price for the 165x400 Michelins WITH tube were about $200 US from Colker

Klaas: Thank you for this information. I think this is not a bad price for Pirellis -- about USD 265 a piece. ReOriginals in the USA lists them at USD 420.
Stu, FYI: Coker doesn't sell Pirellis. They sell Michelin 165R400 at USD 168 a piece.

Yes, but I tried to get the Pirellis about 8 years ago out of Europe, and was told they couldn't send them as they were not DOT (US Department of Transportation) legal!
