Webers and then some

Well, I have finished my upgrade project for my Spider and wanted to share my views (and some pics) with everyone as this is such a popular topic.

I did a number of upgrades that have been discussed before; Webers, 123 electronic ignition, alternator, and coil. The results are truly incredible.

I removed my intake manifold and mailed it to Pierce Manifold where they did the Weber set-up. This included de-siamesing the manifold and setting up the Weber 45 DCOE-9's, including the linkage and mailed the whole thing back to me. Their work was just superb and Mike Pierce is a great guy to work with. The cost was right around $2,400, not including shipping which I think is pretty damn fair. Special thanks to Lock Holmes and Matt at Re-originals for helping me with new rubber carburetor mounts.

Anyway, I then had my mechanic, Dan Pluth at Foreign Auto Menders install the webers with the now-modified intake, along with a 123 Electronic ignition, a 65amp alternator, a new Bosch Blue coil, and lastly new Magnecor spark plug wire. Before I forget, Dan Pluth is the finest mechanic I have ever had the privilege to have work on my car (any future children I have, boy or girl will be named Dan).

So what are the results? The results are a much different car in many ways. The performance is truly impressive. It is A LOT FASTER than before. It is fast enough that by the time I have hit third gear I'm nervous and laughing with joy at the same time.
The sound is incredible. It sounds like something from '63LeMans race. The car idles so smoothly, that I sometimes give it a little gas just to re-assure myself it is running.

Anyway, I just thought I would share my experience with everyone and also say thanks to all the ARBB members who have contributed their knowledge and experiences about all the things I did to my beloved money-pit.

What you need now is a modified Cold Air Box

I notice you now have velocity stacks. Those are okay. But you can hear the air being sucked into them and there is no decent air filter.

I have not only been modifying intake manifolds by desiamesing them, i.e. making separate runners for each hole, I also developed a thin "gender mender" to fit the end of the 45 DCOE (and 40 DCOE) so the cold air box still fits (especially on the two liter which has no "crossover" section to connect to the air filter cannister like 2600). Have tried several types of modifications, now believe there is a good way to see that each carburetor draws the same "first" vent air onto the places in the carburetor above the air jets without all those plastic hoses on some previous versions I have seen.

Would you now on your hot car be interested in trying a modified cold air box that will allow you to use your air cleaner and restore your hearing?

Jay, thanks for your input, but I love the sound of three webers-a-suckin', especially at around 5000-60000rpm........!!!

Hey Jay,

I am planning to fit Webers to my spider, and am interested in your airbox solution.

What does it look like, and how much is it!

Also could you explain the factory solution of the three tubes to the crossover tube? And what is "first" vent air - sounds interesting!

Best,

John
