alfa romeo 2600 spider fuse box: proper fuses

Hi
Looking at my owner's manual and at the parts books I was not able to determinate what the proper fuse arrangement should be. i noticed that 11x 8 amps fuses and 3 x25 fuses were used(in spite of only twelve slots).
Does anyone have some information or pictures of the proper arrangement for a spider?
let me know
Herve

Hi Michael
In the parts book it list about , 8 amps 25 Amp and 15amp.
In some alfa nots on my owners manual it mention that fuse 5 for the fog lights should be 15amps.
I have not much infos on this subject.. does any else has more specifics?
regards
Herve

I concur with that -- for an original European setup. Unfortunately, there are several variants of lighting configurations (fog lights or high beams, presence/absence of parking lights inside the front direction indicator lights, etc) that appear to be not fully documented with respect to their impact on wiring harnesses and fuse capacity.

The best way is to calculate the load on the circuit and use a fuse appropriate for that load. The 8 Amp fuses stated in the owners manual should be good for a 100 W load per circuit. Many owners have upgraded the headlights with higher wattage bulbs or H4 lights that may consume more power per fused circuit. Therefore, a mix of 8 Amp (white) and 16 Amp (red) fuses can be seen quite often (16 Amp on 2.5 mm˛ wires for head lights, fog lights and radio circuit with cigarette lighter).

I think 25 Amp (blue) fuses should not be used without upgrading the wiring as these fuses may exceed the load capacity of the wires and cause a fire hazard. 5 Amp (yellow) fuses are pretty much useless but sometimes can be seen on radio and instrument circuits (when no cigarette lighter is installed on the radio circuit).

Ruedi and Herve, As always thanks for your insight. I agree about the foglights,my car came with foglights and the "extra"switch on the dash before the previous owner modified them . The wiring is larger and would lend itself to a 16 amp fuse. I am in the middle of installing a seperate relay for the headlights, not just for brighter lights but just to protect the 50 year old wiring and switch. My car is back for the upholstery shop and Ii will be posting some photos of the interior next week.

My car has been safely re-wired as you suggest . The dim /dip switch on the steering column is used to switch a low volt relay - this then feeds high or low beam - better than feeding the full headlight current through the switch

I may be a heretic here but electricity is one area where I think originality should be sacrificed for safety. You can keep the orignal fuse block and 8 amp fuses, but convert the hi-amperage circuits to relays with separate supply feed from the battery feed or alternator terminal.

To be safe, the wiring should be re-done from headlight/foglight all the way back to the relays in addition to new feed wires.

One of the best benefits from new circuits is that they will take a load off the column and dash switches, thus preserving their life. They also will allow you to match wire size to loads and fuses. Use a heavy gauge (14) for the supply feed; 16 should be fine for the leads from relays to lights. Relays and in-line fuse components are available at most auto stores.

Here's a pic of a little relay panel with circuits for high & low beam and fog light...it's mounted on the existing panel where the horn relay is. To keep things looking more "original" you could of course use just black wire, but then it might be a good idea to use labels on the wires to identify them in case you ever needed to go back and trouble shoot.

Note also the shrink tubing to insulate each wire spade just in case anything vibrates loose. The fuses are not shown- they're "in-line"- spliced with quick connectors.
