Hi
does anyone have a source for new gas gage sending units for the 2600, or does anyone has a source to restore the units to new condition?
Regards
herce
PS: Afra and OKP do not supply this item

fuel sender

Herve

I am sure alfaholics or classic alfa in the UK will have something. They always say they only do 105 series cars - but the Veglia senders are the same I believe on the 106. Just check the resistance range and you may have to bend the arm. This is my next project

All Veglia gauges on Alfas I believe work 240 ohms empty/min , 100 ohms 1/2 , 30ohms full/max

A full calibration is ( this is from a DeTomaso web site!)

liters R (ohm) gauge
> ---------------------
> empty ~2k empty-- lamp on
> 5 321 empty- lamp on
> 10 272 empty+ lamp goes out
> 15 234 1/16
> 20 208 1/8+
> 25 180 1/4-
> 30 160 1/4+
> 35 135 3/8
> 40 115 1/2-
> 45 100 1/2+
> 50 88 9/16-
> 55 75 3/4-
> 60 60 3/4
> 65 48 3/4+
> 70 27 4/4-
> 75 3 4/4+
> 80 2.5 4/4+

Alfaholics sell an electronic sender

Quote from their web site - "If you have early Veglia gauges, we can supply a special electronic sender that is compatible with them as original, as fitted to Max's GTA Replica" listed at the end of the new products section.

Also search posts for fuel sender and fuel sender issues, you may be able to repair your old one

Cheers

Ian

fuel sender

Herve

I have just checked the parts manual - the sender is listed as

102.00.32.050.00 which means it is common to the early 2 litre but not the 105.

1st option

Heinbrand do list the sender - HEINBRAND AUTOMOTIVE . If you can make your way through the German

Look under "Benzinversorgong" fuel system?- item 1 - price "auf Anfrage" - on enquiry? they do speak English if you call .

This is also a great web site for 2600 parts - if you can stand the prices!

If you look under 105 section you will see the senders are different mechnically - but porobably could be modified

2nd option

G. Häckner GmbH - Ersatzteile für Alfa Romeo

German website - difficult to navigate

Look under

On-line shop
Classic technik
Filter
Kraftstoffsystem
Tankgeber

Or type "106 tankgeber" in search panel and press "los" search?

You will also then get call for a price

Call Ludwig Mai - he speaks good english

The fuel sending unit has been NLA for quite some time (but it's still worth checking if Reoriginals has any left). OKP used to have an exchange program for refurbished fuel senders (no longer listed on their web site but worth sending an e-mail inquiry).

A while ago, I posted in the Yahoo newsgroup a description of the fuel sending unit with suggestions for repair (carefully bead blasting the corroded mechanism goes a long way).

The 106 fuel sender is 90 Ohms. I haven't played with 105 senders yet but thought using a simple low-power op amp as voltage follower and impedance converter may do the trick to use the 105 sender with the 106 gauge.

Either way, please let us know what you find out!

fuel sender

Ruedi

Thanks for your notes

Sorry then the calibration I showed is wrong. inverted for a Jaeger or VDO gauge . Also not 240 ohm range - 0 out of 2 - I'll do more research before I post next time.

From your note -empty I assume is full resistance 90 Ohms - Full is zero

I intend to go the clean up route on my sender as your notes. The only small problem I have is the sender unit on my tank does not align with the hole in the floor - so I may have to take the tank off!

Photo of fuel sender 2600 spider?

Hi,

My fuel sender is missing the arm and float!

Does anyone have a photo of the complete fuel sender?

Or an old one I can buy?

Thanks,

John

Here are some pictures of my fuel sender (not for sale) when I removed it from the tank. There are also senders with plastic floats. So far, I haven't measured the length of both arms yet (to determine the mechanical parameters for empty and full) or compared it to Giulietta, 105 or 116 fuel senders yet (which may require some simple electronics to emulate the 90 Ohm variable resistor).

Picture of my '59 2000 Fuel sending unit for johnrdm and tubut

Am I right in thinking that the arms should slide in response to the float?
If so, how do I free up the action? A solid connection needs to be reestablished at the lever pivot once the slide is freed up.
I suppose any reasonable kind of float could be used to make it work.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Roger.

Yes the arms should move.

It appears that the brass spindle has frozen in the aluminum housing - this seems a common problem.

I used a map torch (carefully) plus penetrating oil inside and out (be careful as the oil will tend to catch fire - not good) to free up my spindle, but in my case the steel lever was still attached to the spindle.

In your case it sounds like the steel lever is moving on the brass spindle, and that is a problem, as you have no leverage to unstick the spindle (you can't use the little arms inside as they are too weak).

Perhaps you could carefully solder a piece of steel over the lever and spindle end, to allow you to slowly and carefully wiggle the spindle free?

I found a float in a junkyard - modern closed cell foam - fitted with only minor tweaking.

Don't you just love old cars?

John's approach seems to be sensible. You may also want to consider repeated hot/cold treatment (heating up the spindle area and then shock it with freezing spray) to see if it comes lose with little force.

Actually it's MAPP - its similar to a propane torch but a fair bit hotter.

Thanks everyone, have not got it loose yet....taking my time about it.

Sent an email to Rebuilt Fuel Sending Unit Specialist after seeing an ad at the top of this page with inquiry as to what it would take for them to deal with it. Got this response:

Hello Roger, Yes the arms should be moving with the float. Cost of repair is hard to say but expect it to be in the 95.00 to $125.00 range plus any parts if needed. I hope this helps and have a great holiday.
Thank You,
That Sending Unit Guy!

Has anyone dealt with them?

Happy 4th, Roger.
