2600 Spider "Rake"

I have 64 Spider 2600 that apprently has a rake to it ? In effet the rear is higher than the front. I originally thought my front springs has lost their spring due to age an weight of engine so i purchased a new set of front and rear springs from the Spring company in Kansa city I belive which had the original specs and was recomended by the Alfa BB . Anyway I still have the rake although note as bad as original . Has anybody run into this problem before ? My front wheels welll arch center to floor is 26" and the rear is 27.5 inches ?

I hope to post a picture soon and would love to fix the problem. I believe the rear is simply 1.5 ibnches to high as car should be level and really don't like the rake look ?

Any thoughts or comments would be gratly appreciated

Many Thanks
Andy

to get perhaps a more accurate measurement Andy, measure from the center of each hub ( spinner in your case I think) to the top of the wheel well...this will minimize the effect of different tire pressures

My 2600 Spider sits nearly level only with a full tank of gas and all the normal stuff in the trunk; spare tire, tools, jack, battery. With a nearly empty gas tank, the rear is noticeably higher.

Every 102 and 106 series car I've had (about a dozen over the years) has had a slight rake to it.

Pages 19-20 of Pub. 912 "Technical Characteristics and Principal Inspection Specifications" show how front and rear suspension can be checked with weights of 50 kg (110 lbs) on each front seat and weights of 25 kg (55 lbs) on the floor behind the seats. For the front suspension, measurements are taken on the lower A-arms. The rear suspension is measured as distance between the rear axle and the upper limit stop bumper. All measurements are to be taken on a level surface with a full tank and spare wheel and all tools (including car jack) in place.

Question Are your front suspension joints stuck?

I apologize for even suggesting this, especially after you wrote that you already switched front springs. However, I know that the front suspension "A" arms (I call them the wishbones) bind at the king pin location, i.e. at the end nearest the wheels. I once saw and example bound up so bad that there was NO SPRING ACTION at all. The rubber bumper "horn" sticking down from the body through the front springs was actually mashed up against the bottom of the pan at the bottom of the spring. The only way to raise the front up was to physically pull it up (man, it would squeak loud). All this from a lack of lubrication. I would never even hint at such a situation of neglect and lack of love of a car to anyone who must love your car every bit as much as I, but I do know that it can happen. Once I acquired an otherwise fantastic "basketcase" two liter spider with front suspension stuck down so tight I had to use heat to get the front outside bearings to release and take grease (took grease and moved, but the rubber seals did not fare well, so would have been much wiser to disassemble). SINCE THEN -- thirty five years ago -- I HAVE ALWAYS USED LITHIUM BASED GREASE on front suspension which somehow does seem to keep them from getting rusty and bind up. I try to be very careful to keep the front suspension regularly greased. When the front is stuck down a spider does have a rakish look. Do you hear loud noises when you hit a bump? Hope you can still get grease into the zerks without coming out in the wrong place.

Thnaks guys for all the great feedback

I remeasured from the center of each knockoff to edge of wheelwell and the front is 14.3" while rear is 15.3 " so suspect I actually have about 2 inch difference when I inflate rear times. I also supected full tank would help and sure enough my tank is low ( as ussual) . Don't believe it will take a lot of weight to lower rear. Thanks Ruedi for the spec's and I will also look at some Lithium grease as that can't hurt.

I at least feel better knowing I'm not cracking up and will fool around with your suggestions and let you know outcome .

Thanks again

Andy
