Gas and oil shocks both use oil that's forced thru calibrated orifices (orifii?) to dampen suspension movement. Gas shocks just have a small charge of gas, like nitrogen, in the void above the oil to keep the oil under a little pressure to help prevent oil aeration under hot/harsh conditions.
