cam belt template

Hi Guys,
at the moment as you can probably see by the amount of threads I'm putting down range I'm doing some major work on my old girl at the moment. I just lined up the cams and TDC and used the template from this site only to find the rear cam is not on 69 degrees but is actually sitting on 66 degrees. Would this difference make any major difference to the running of the engine, since if it is supposed to I'm not feeling it, she still has heaps of get up and go and hasn't had any problems. Any info would be great !!

Cheers

Retarded cam timing will give you more low end grunt but if front cam on mark and rear one retarded engine not balanced between heads. If front one was also retarded the same amount I guess engine would even have more low end go power.

This retarded cam timing is a trick used sometimes when setting up a tow truck/vehicle to give it more power to pull a heavy car trailer, etc.

Hey Steve,
all I know is I have turned the engine through TDC 4 times and it dosen't make a difference to where the rear pulley mark comes to rest. What I can make out though is whoever did the job before has marked the pulleys with a white marker and these are all lining up, but it still puts the back pulley out on the template by about 4 degrees(66 rather than 69). so what do you think would be the next course of action? Should I just line the cam pulley up with the template or use the old marking. The only thing I can think of is at some stage the belt has jumped a tooth on that cam pulley somehow. Shouldn't I be seeing some sought of difference with the engine if one of the cams is a fraction out with the other (rough idling etc) If so I'm not.

Cheers

Sometimes close enough but no cigar is what you get. However, it maybe possible to get rear cam one (1) cog closer to 69 so try to install new belt after you fix your tensioner issue and see if you can hit correct timing mark. Again I will say when cams jump timing usually goes advanced not retarded and that is what gives bad idle and BENDS valve if goes to far advanced.

If there is any doubt in your mind you can remove intake and rear valve cover and verify timing mark on cam pulley is correct.
