oil fed tensioner

Hi guys,
thought I would throw this one at you and see what you think. Is it possible for a oil fed tensioner to operate as a mechanical fed tensioner?? Since I just took all the covers off the front of the engine and their staring me in the face is a oil fed tensioner with no bottom spring or tensioner arm,so any ideas would be much appreciated. Still got to take it off to find out if the oil hole has been plugged, but at the moment I can't work it out.

Cheers

This is a new one. Sounds like the welded the feed stud closed and just adjusted it to run off the eccentric bearing.
I would suggest trying to return to the proper way it runs. I have a trick for the leaky seal, rebuild the unit, find a arm and spring(I have an arm, may be able to order a spring)

The unit was supposed to have been rebuilt by my mechanic last December!! When I rang him up to ask him where the rest of it was he said that was all of it, so I think this set up has been running like this for a very long time since I picked the old girl up in November last year. If it wasn't for having to do the powersteering and the cam seals it would be at least another couple of years before it would have been found.

That spring and arm are pretty crucial in the set-up. Did he say if the feed stud was actually pumping oil? Rebuild? Why would he rebuild it? makes no sense to if it is not working the way it should. When the oil pressure drops the internal spring pushed the plunger down on the arm to tighten the belt for start up. Then lets off when the oil pressure is up and rides on the eccentric bearing and arm spring. Running without it is like a fixed tensioner. You would need to adjust the tension every 10K miles. I have a feeling he did not rebuild it, that he just tensioned it as the tensioner with oil going through it makes no sense without the arm/spring.

I would rather have this setup than what you have going now as there could be potential to throw the belt on start up.

IMO I would search out the rest of the parts and ask your mechanic what he exactly did? rebuild? New seal kit and all? Does the feed stud actually feed oil to it still?
I am just slightly worried that that set up could throw the belt at some point.

May not but could.
