Gearbox Follies

OK, I remember reading here recently about exploding gearboxes on a 164 and having that feeling of doom creep over me.

I've lost 3rd and 4th gear in my 91 164 S. It started two days ago when 3rd was making screechy noises. So I revved up in 2nd and went straight to 4th. Got home and parked the car. Monday morning: no 3rd and no 4th, now I have to go from 2nd to 5th. Not good for general driving and I'm afraid it may spread.

My question is: does this sound like a total gearbox rebuild - and any idea what that costs? Or could this be a (less expensive) partial replacement of synchro? Or something else.

Hope y'all can help...

Don't see how you are going to be able to fix it with out tearing it down completely to see what's wrong. The more it's driven, the more it will tear up most likely. So, if you want that one to be fixable, you better park it. Not good news at all, sorry. You could also start looking for a good used one.
