Broke down

Hi all, the 164 has left me stranded hence me typing this from a phone. The engine spins and tries to fire and then loses interest. So i've ruled out the cam belt and the plugs were changed 3k ago. Any usual suspects to check out first? There is no fuel smell and no pools of fluid under the car. And it has over half a tank of gas.

Sorry to hear about your problem. But it sound like a fuel issue to me, are you sure you have fuel? It might be a blocked filter or line. If was was a few thousand miles closer, I'd come and get you with the trailer and take the car home, and save you the towing bill.

Could be failure of the small hose that connects the pump to the rest of the assembly, check fuel preassure.

Euro spec 96 164 24v?

You need to see if fuel pump will run and if any fuses are blown for engine services. Check 3 fuses under black plastic cover on top radiator support. The 3 amp for computer, 7.5A O2 sensor and 15A for fuel pump.

You can check fuel pump by removing relay next to red stripe relay on top radiator support under that same black cover as fuses. You can remove relay and check for 12v in relay socket slot 30 with key on. You can jump from slot 30 to 87 with key on and fuel pump should run. If so try to start car.

Chances are if pump runs and car won't start you have a cracked rubber hose(s) in tank. Item 18 in picture below of Euro pump set up. Note there are two item 18 hoses in set up.

A pressure check with a gauge teed into fuel line will verify.

Cheers Steve, did the electrical checks you suggested and on inspecting that lot we found a break in the the lead to the pump, must have only been connected by two strands all is now good

@geh458, thank you, they're are many fine people in the AR community. On another site i frequent, we learned a member had died in a accident and we had a whip round to get the car road worthy for his Father.

I doubt you'd get that on forums for a certain German brand, but i'll leave it at that.
