164 Paint Fade

I have looked at several 1995 Alfa 164 in the USA (East Coast), and they all were red and all had paint fade issues. Is this a common problem with the 164?

I would say it's a pretty comon issue amoung all paint that has not been properly cared for. My car has faded to a nice rich darker red (more blue than yellow) which I like much better that the normal alfa 130 red.

It's a common problem with red cars in general. My '95 Land Rover had it, my brother's VW golf had it. Some more knowledgable painters can chime in, but I heard it was something about the pigment...

Most red 164s we see have sunburned clearcoats on the horizontal surfaces, which looks like faded or oxidized paint.

This type of clearcoat damages is actually worse than faded paint as it will not compound or polish to a nice shine.
