Not really. Plot out a graph of the dollar versus the Euro. It's pretty brutal.

Check with Jason at Alfissimo. I bought one from him a couple of weeks ago for significantly less than that. Terry

Already bought one, just b*tching about the price out loud
Being that I bought one for $100 a couple months ago, it still is quite significant considering the exchange or not.

Makes the idea of switching back to the old oil fed tensioner sound even more reasonable, me thinks. $180?!! They can keep the lump of doo doo for that money. I can't afford to turn around these days, it seems. I have to admit that the dirt cheap cost of 240 Volvo parts has me more than a little spoiled.

$180? Ouch. I have them for $117 so I am not sure the hefty cost of whom ever sells them for that much? $117 seems to be basically the price for years now. Sure gone up a little from the past, use to run about $85, then 90+ Now $117.

How hard is it to go back to the Hydraulic unit... and who has them? I truly dislike the tension that comes from installing the fixed unit...
Cheers
Martin.

I wouldn't mind the price if it was a decent part, but it's junk! Why can't Alfa make a decent tensioner for these cars. Sperry Valve Works did it, Alfa Heaven did it, why can't Alfa?

Easy. All you need is a good used unit, rebuild it with a new bearing, also need the back plate, lever spring and feed stud (most parts I do have) But tensioner body and eccentric bearing.
Easy to revert back. I just did it and wrote up somethings about it with pictures.
I will finish the post with a detailed summary of the job and the workings of the detensioner itself. Very fascinating actually! (post is fairly recent) look through 1-3 pages here.
I think alfa could have made something much better sure. The unit was not so bad in the beginning but I have seen a product decrease in quality over the years. I busted 3 in a matter of months. Had nothing to do with installation, improper use or anything like that. I install these all the time. They just broke on start up, plain and simple they are junk. Some folks have no issues others have issues all the time. I decided I wanted my car back to original. I had a brand new unit on the shelf and finally took the plung. It was much easier than I thought. I have few moments of unsure thoughts of what the hell I was doing since I have not seen these units in 100 years but I got it.
Super easy to adjust, basically bullet proof, Oil leaks are in the past as there is a simple fix for the main reason they leaked. It is well worth the initial cost of the tensioner. over time it will be a much lower cost to maintain and a hell of a lot less worry. NA is the only market using them even though I do send them to other countries as more and more they are reverting to these mechanical tensioner as I am not sure they have figured out that we still have the bearings, kits and nailed the leak issue.
Anyways, if you can find one, snag it up with all it's parts. $39 for a kit, $69 for a new bearing, around $15 for a feed stud. I have 5 new ones left in stock. I have a few new spring pipes and some other odds and ends of these things.
Honestly the best set up.
Ciao!
