rear wheel bearing part number?
Hi
Time to replace rear wheel bearings as they are making a lot of noise. The Alfa dealer says that I need to buy the entire hub assembly as the bearing is not sold separately. Price is a bit crazy. I want to buy the bearing and press it in myself if possible. Anybody done this already? Does anybody have the actual bearing number (I assume it's an SKF bearing?) that I can order form the local SKF rep.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

From what I know, your dealer is right....you have to order the hub assembly for the rear.

Oz, When you take the hub off, you'll probably find that the inner bearing will come apart and leave the inner bearing race on the axle stub. I had to split that inner race by cutting it almost all the way through, them giving it one good whack right on the cut with a hammer and chisel. The race cracked the rest of the way, and came off easily.
The new hub has two sealed bearings in it, and the outer body is rolled over pretty heavily - it looks as if you're not intended to press the bearings out. I didn't keep my old one to look at for you, but I'm sure you COULD take it apart, with some work.
When you get the inner and outer races out of the hub, if you choose to go that way, I'm sure a visit to your bearing supplier would get you a pair of new bearings, which would then have to be pressed-in to the hub, and some arrangement made to keep them in place. Nothing's impossible!
I bought a replacement hub from Centerline, in the US, and as I recall it wasn't all that expensive. My car is a non-ABS model. It's my understanding that ABS cars need the factory(read expensive) hubs.
Maybe someone on here could help with part numbers.

164 Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly
The hub is the bearing. If you have ABS iT has serrated ring on it if NON ABS it doesn't but the double row of bearings are fitted inside hub. It is not intended to be able to press out OLD bearings.
Alfa part number is 60568138 for rear hub and bearing with ABS.
Also FYI 164 front wheel bearing current part number is 46421951 old numbers were 60810368 and 60811569.
Two samples of rear wheel bearings I have from Centerline Alfa are both made in Italy by Mozzo Ruota
Non-ABS is Rif.17767 Centerline's catalog number WB886 ALSO SKF is a VKBA 1449
WITH ABS is Rif. 17768 CL's number WB887 Also SKF is a VKBA-1450
Here is SKF web site part numbers FOR Alfa 164 5X98 BOLT PATTERN WHEEL BEARINGS:

OZ, If you still have time, you might think about ordering the hub axle nuts at the same time. The way they're locked in place is to deform one of the locking tabs, and when you take it off, sometimes the tab will break off. Hope this helps. Dennis.

Depending upon a lot of variables, you might be money to the good by ordering from otherwhere than Oz, if you can tolerate the shipping delay. Check out Centerline (USA, Colorado) for instance, or IAP (Virginia) both at just over US$100. plus S/H.

#@$@#$%$#%. Too late. I just paid AUD$270 for one (luckily only had to do right hand side). Other Alfa dealer in town quoted me AUD$380 for one, so I thought I was doing ok, until Mr-T showed up. Thanks for the help. Will order the left hand side from US next time.

Is Centerline able to get the non-ABS version? My recollection is that Alfa (or possibly just ARDONA), discontinued the non-ABS one several years ago, since the ABS version could be used in a non-ABS car. The down-side was that it was something like 3X more expensive, but I guess that was just a "sucks for you" kinda deal.
