Question timing issue

Hi everyone, possible 164s owner here, found an ad on craigslist.com owner said the water pump and timing belt were just done, but the timing belt was put on wrong (figures) I just spent about 3 hours with my eyes glued to the screen reading all I can about your very nice sedans I work at autozone (dont flame me! lol) looked it up in the computer and it "said" it was non interference engine, which means if they messed up the timing, nothing has been damaged yet.

But after reading Steve's guide and a couple of other posts, it seems like it IS an interference motor

any input and a definite yes or no on the motor being interference or not would be great

ps - the car is a 93' 164s

It is defiantly interference, you do not want to jump time on these by more then a few teeth if that. There are many timing belt threads on here, as well as a nifty template to tell you if you are off on your valve timing, I am sure somebody (hint hint alfisto steve) has the thread. Best of luck on your 164, great car, you will love it once you get it sorted

That will only tell you where the timing is now, not where it's been.

And I think I would rate even a guess by Steve (about 164's) over Autozone's computer.

A compression test is definitely in order.

MrBones. Ignore ANY information in the Dayco catalog in regards to the 164. They seem to know nothing about it or the parts that bolt on it. I would be very careful buying a 164 that has been mistimed. If you can set a price and then reset the timing and verify the engine is good (no bent valves) with a compression test and test drive, before money is exchanged, then you could end up with a good car. But unlikely you could make such a deal. So it would be a gamble to buy it as is. No telling what the PO has done, if they have had the timing belt off and had no idea of what they were doing. If you can get it very cheap and don't mind fixing it or finding another engine... well, up to you. Good luck with the 164.

I would wait for another one to come along. I would bet it is a bad one.
