Steve - I believe that Bandman's car is a '91 US version 'L'. What is your advice?

Does car have recall filler - male threads on cap so it fits into filler neck. Should be a Recall 96V-140 decal on inside of fuel filler access door.
If not check for rusted clamp and leak in wheel well where filler attaches to rubber filler hose.
Also check for properly hooked up filler vent tube in wheel well.
If fuel pump has been removed for hose repair check for sealing washers on tank cover bolts (USA steel tank models). You must remove front carpet from trunk to see top of tank and gas line plumbing. You must pull white plastic pop fastners out of ski boot surround to remove front carpet.
Vent cannister under rear speaker has tubing and vent check valve that needs to be checked too.
There is a two piece plastic cover over top of tank access opening in trunk floor.

Hey AlexGS
I think the recall only applied to US versions - if your car has a plastic tank then you're ok.

Hi - thanks. Yes it has a plastic tank. I remember my last 164 had a fuel leak from a breather pipe that ran from the filler down to where it joined the tank. Pipe was about the size of a heater hose, and was hardened and split. It was easy enough to replace the pipe - I don't seem to have that problem with my current 164.

Hi, I have a 91 spider with a crack and thus a leak in the rubber fuel neck filler hose... I was trying to budge it loose to get an idea of the size of hose I'll need to replace it but it's fairly well attached - what's the trick? also, is there any way just to patch it or is a replacement needed... Can I just go and find a replacement hose at Osh / Home Depot or do you recommend that I order the correct part: Vick Autosports -- Fuel Neck Filler Hose - Spider ... $36+shipping seems steep for a darn hose - then again I haven't even begun to look for a replacement -- i was expecting it'd be less that $10...
Thanks.

Found fuel fume leak in 164 trunk
Had gas fumes in trunk of 91 164L Quik Silver 2 rescue project.
I found cracks in elbows A and E lucky I had spares as they are part of tubes 13 and 7 and not part numbered as just the elbows.

Just my perspective here....Dark_Soul has repented of his parsimony, but others may also benefit from the following exercise: Imagine a beautiful day, wind in your face, driving down the road in a Spider with no fuel fumes in your nose or eyes. Or in those of your lady, sitting next to you with adoring eyes and soft hands. Then consider how many of those hours you might spend otherwise, sitting in your garage alone trying to cobble together a $15 fix in place of a $36 part. Kind of makes it seem futile, no?
Much the same argument applies to the 164 sedan.

LOL!
The other night, I had images of rolling down the road in my 164, sun glinting off the glossy, stone-chip-free bonnet, and maybe even someone special (yet to be searched for/found) in the passenger's seat.
Yesterday I bought a $1500 air compressor, $500 spraygun, and spent another $500 on various air hoses, fittings, and a D/A sander. My 164 itself only cost $1000.
Now you can imagine me shattering the peace of the neighbourhood, burning through expensive winter electricity, toiling dilgently by myself in pursuit of a decent paintjob.
This has nothing to do with fuel leaks, but I thought it may serve as a similar reminder of 'expenditure gone wrong'.

Sounds like my rescue society - buy a $900 164 pay my friend $1600 to paint it with his air compressor and spray gun but then give car to my daughter - priceless. Not sure my expenditure has gone wrong though as Quik Silver I soldiers on.
Now Quik Silver 2 awaits it's day in the sun once a/c system sorted out.
