I'd like to know more about the 'promotional F1 drivers crashing 164s on live TV' part. It's a foolproof car to drive, so I wonder how they did it. I just wonder if it might be YouTube - Alfa 164 racing Lots of them on the track and really close. Maybe they were just having fun with the things. Handling looks pretty neutral to me!
I wonder how many other 164 drivers have had the experience of owning a FIAT Croma and Lancia Thema beforehand. They were good, but the 164 is easily the pick of the bunch - particularly for that styling, but reallly for the whole package. It's also pretty well put together when you compare it with FIAT offerings.
I have never really got used to RWD, so the large FWD car is a natural fit for me. I think it comes down to driving style and what you appreciate in a car. I'm not interested in living with a racing car on the road, but to me the 164 has an amazing amount of power and control for a road car.

Good point Alex - doesn't sound like they were too crash hot behind the wheel if you ask me. I guess they were more interested in making a spectacle for the crowds which it sure sounds like they did (in the wrong sense!).
Actually I'd love to read your thoughts on your 166 v's the 164 you have. Was sooooo tempted by the 166 when I bought the 164 cloverleaf recently but REALLY wanted a manual and felt perhaps the 166 might have been a bit too refined for my tastes (who said mid-life crisis!? :P).

I remember watching an old clip of top gear on youtube about executive sedans, which one did they pick as being the least boring? Well that would be the 164 twin spark!

With the New Wheels/Tires on my 164, it's Almost the Best Handling Road Car I've Had!
The best was my brother's X1/9, but that is a small, mid-engined sports car. I'm still exploring the limits of my 164Q in Sport mode with these tires (225/45-17 Michelin PS2's). I keep going faster into the corners, but the tires never begin to start to squeal. Of course, it pales compared to a race car on race tires, but you can't drive them on the street.
BTW, had a Bimmer driver with big wheels and lowered suspension stare at my car the other day as he turned in front of me! Probably didn't know what he was looking at, but knew that he probably should.

If you really want a 4 door from the same era as the 164 that handles, get a Peugeot 405 MI16, I own one, and it will leave my 164 in the dust on a twisty road. Fun to drive, but I do miss the power of the 164

No, the 166 is not 'too refined' - definitely not - just "don't buy" would be my advice. Under any circumstances. Even when it's about AUS$7200 like mine.
I'd love to go into full details but I do want to sell my 166 first (I've had it a month now, so about three weeks too long). Also I'm too busy with other work for the lengthy rant the 166 entails (can you feel the tension build...!)

If a Pugoet can Outrun my 164Q with my current Tires,
You have one very nice handling car. I can't believe the handling of my 164Q after fitting the new tires/wheels. It has totally transformed the car from a mid-90's sport sedan to a very modern car.

I think the Design along has won me over...
I was gonna get a brand new Infiniti G35 until I saw a 93QV on sale!!!
And now I am working on a Q4, white one as well, hopefully it will come out as pretty
as that one Jason has shown!!!
I don't think 164s are the best cars..In fact, they are far from the best cars..
but 164s are different, and never boring, that is worth a million bucks...
