How do you remove the console? Does it just pop off?

I wish! On the early models, there are six (or maybe 8) screws that attach the console to the headliner backing board which can only be accessed by removing the whole or dropping down the front half of the headliner.

I've run across several previously broken consoles that were only held in place by the mirror mounting screws (pop the rear-view mirror off to see them) and the metal bracket that slips under the sunroof opening trim.
