Michael:

That makes sense that the head would need to get worked in a bit but I'm still wondering why the front head's reading dropped 40 PSI when nothing was done to it. The only other possibility I could see would be timing. But I would think you would need to be grossly off to have that happen and as far as I can see I am right on the marks...

The rings _could_ be drier than before. The valves _could_ have been kissed a bit. You're SURE your front head had the 3.0 gasket instead of the 2.5 gasket? or am I missing something else? Or running at lower revs could hold the pressure down if there are leaks.

Michael, as full of opinions as usual

Got the car all together and she started right up, idled smooth and reved freely. The motor is quiet and confident (a bit of a personification but what the heck). On the road she's got great power and shows no bad behavior whatsoever. With one exception: The throttle stuck at WOT when it hung up on the plastic bellcrank cover. That was a bit exciting but fortunately it was in gear and I have good brakes!

As for the compression, after driving it around a bit I let it cool some and re-tested. All the way around I'm getting 150 PSI - 155 PSI at WOT. I really don't know what to make of it except that (1) I wasn't actually there when they were pulling 200 PSI, (2) it is very consistent between cylinders which is a good sign and (3) 150 PSI doesn't sound too bad anyway. I really don't think I lost 50 PSI, I think either there was a gauge error or a reading error...

Anyway I'm really happy with its performance and I really appreciate everyone's help in sorting this car out.

So all three 164's are up and running and driven daily. Sweet!
