Question 1991 Alfa 164

I have found a 1991 Alfa 164 that won't start and also needs a key.
Where can I find a key?
What should I look for when and if I try to get it started?
They are asking $700.00 and it looks like it is in good shape with about 90M miles.

You can get a good locksmith to make a key by doing an impression with a blank key in ignition lock. I did this on one I bought without a key.

As for trying to start without a key you can jumper red to pink and brown in connector to ignition switch and then touch a jumper from red to purple-black to get starter to work.

Before spending any money on it, I'd put a socket on the crank shaft nut and turn it over by hand a couple of revolution to make sure the timing belt hasn't slipped and it has engine damage, or look for timing marks on the plastic timing belt covers to make sure it is timed right.

Good idea but there aren't any timing marks on 164 teming belt covers like GTV6 or Milano. Go clockwise turning crank pulley with 41mm aka 1 5/8" socket and when you have crank pulley at top dead center (TDC) check for rear cam pulley timing mark at 1 o'clock and front cam pulley timing mark at 11 o'clock. If none appear try going another 360 degress on crank pulley and check again.

Disclaimer my son's $177.50 ebay 164 does not have any timing marks on either cam pulley hub so no timing marks outside engine except TDC mark on crank pulley.

Here is some light reading for you Changing Alfa 164 12v V6 Timing Belt and Water Pump click on timing template and print off on 8x14 paper (two 8x11 taped together works, too).

Is car 5-speed or automatic?

Yes, no factory timing marks, but many of us have put our own timing marks on. I thought he could look for those.

Then again all he has to do is print out the template listed on the BB somewhere and use it

5 speed why do you ask?
I think the Pope made it a sin to drive an automatic Alfa.

Maybe he did but whatever the type of tranny they both have issues. The 5-speed can succumb to the dreaded cheap bean counter dictated ball bearing failure in input shaft if it hasn't been updated to overload roller bearing design sometime in last 10-15 years.

This car does not use a pilot bearing in end of crankshaft so input shaft bearing in front of tranny case carries major loads so roller bearing is the bearing of choice.
