Got spanked by a Z
About 40 minutes ago I'm at a light getting ready to go under an underpass to take an freeway on ramp when I notice a 90's vintage 300 Z behind me. It's black, looks lowered a bit, some paint fade like my S, I can't tell if it's a twin turbo or not but when the light changes I take the the 100 yard straight to the ramp and he's right on my tail. I'm pushing it but not totally. I get to the top of the ramp and start on the freeway straight and I'm in third @ 6500 rpm and he changes lanes and leaves me like I'm standing still... His car didn't even squat! He just scooted off to the fast lane and bye bye! His plates said "SLOWZ"... Right... No spoiler but quad tip exhaust so it may have been a non turbo 3.0. It wasn't stock I'll tell you that... It kinda sucked!

I'll still take the Alfa. If it makes you feel any better, that Z could have taken a bunch of Ferraris (308, 328, etc).

The 300ZX TT can take out even more than that if it is a TT car. With a 1/4 around 13.5ish, they knew they had you from the start.

This was in my garage for a time but now a GTV-6 sits in its place. Not nearly as quick as the Z but I can push it harder on the street without being a criminal.

Yes, but you looked and sounded better, even in defeat.

A good friend of mine has a older NA 300Z that he takes to the track. Their heavy cars................he had to upgrade the brakes to take the abuse of the track.

POOR BABY! Sleeper Z but what the hay, tomorrow is another day and your driving an Alfa remember that. I got cut off by a chevy suburban in my 93L Rosso on the way to pick up my daughter from school as she turned 17 yesterday and left her car at our other house because her firend took her out to celebrate and she didn't get to bring her 91B home.
I got to drive my 91B, her 91B and my 93L today. I bet that Z driver only got to smoke one 164.

I've always liked that gen Z especially the TT, I expect to eat exhaust from those, this one was probably a built non turbo and my S is stock... My car does look way cooler though!
I'll see him again and ask what he's got under the hood.

I had a red 1991 300 ZX TT and it had no badges at all and was faster than my Q that I had at the time. Do not under estimate those cars as I have done before. I still chose to keep the Alfas!

I don't understand the styling of the 5th gen Z cars. They have a dorky looking roof line. I would take a 4th gen though in a heartbeat, a much more timeless design. The 164 is a fast enough car, but definitely not stupid fast.

The Z TT cars are worth a mint, look good, and sound great. To be honest, I would take the Z over the Alfa. Id sell the Z, and buy about 3 164s.....

What the driving experience is truly about?
I used to feel just like you when my aged 164 got clobbered on acceleration by the newer Japanese cars like the G35, IS300, 350Z etc. The 164 while a very powerful car in its day is definitely getting old. 200bhp is nothing nowadays with most average family sedans having from 180 to 220bhp and the sports cars with 250+bhp. I have been contemplating the idea of getting a Corvette C6 or even a Mustand GT, cars built solely for straight line acceleration so I can win the stop light battles but then I came to realize that this is a dangerous path. If you play this game with 300bhp cars where nobody wants to lose, you will probably end up at speeds over 100mph before you know it and ego will get somebody killed. So now I am saving for a good example of a 348 or Lotus where I know I am driving a fine car where more than just speed counts and there is no need to prove it to anybody.

I love the 164, but to be honest.... I am about speed. I do not care what name is on the hood, if I get outrun, the car beating me is better, and deserves it respect.

Speed
I agree that speed (power) is an important part of a car but at least IMHO it's not what defines a great car. Any highschool mechanic can take a chevy or ford big block, slap a supercharger on it and make it into a muscle car that can go like a rocket in a straight line. Making a great gorgeous car is about the entire package... design, ergonomics, engine, feel, quality of material at the limite handling, etc. Japanese automakers realize this and that's why they always emulate European cars. Have you seen the Acura and Lexus commercials? They always invariably mention Europeans brands and draw comparison to BMW and Mercedes. You never see the reverse.

There is quite a big difference between a hillbilly with his chevy, and a 300ZX. Steve Millen has won numerous races with his old 300ZX, dont be daft.
