This home boy whipped by daughter's 164

Happy Hour here as I am whipped after changing out seized a/c compressor on Sara's 164B. I found one compressor piston swelled in cylinder bore and two metal reeds broken off on for suction (think chain saw 2-cycle engine design).

Fellow Alfisti (chapter prez) gave me his old compressor that only had a bad coil for clutch. I installed good coil, new shaft seal from tractor supply (Harold's Electric) in Walla Walla, WA and new clutch pulley bearing from Koyo USA in Memphis. I may have to purge system, install new receiver dryer and expansion valve to be safe (only money).

Sara has learned who to drive 93L 5-speed since her A/T was down for seized compressor. Amazing what desire for non-parental mobility (aka taxi service) can do.

I did Sara's alternator regulator, too as brushes were worn badly.

Will test drive tomorrow if I get time. State inspection and tags run out tonight. Always something more to do.

Fellow Alfisti have a nice weekend!

I once had a compressor split the casing 3/4 of the way around.

Don't do it Steve!! He'll drink all your booze!!

I'm getting ready to go to the shop and align the 164 AFTER I remove the stupid poly bushing From IAP that don't fit. Going back to stock. It never seems to end with the stupid little things. Can you imagine what it would cost if you had to pay someone to do all this stuff?
I hope that when it comes time for her to leave the nest she'll find someone who is as handy as you or you'll be fixing more cars.

I am too fast for him to drink all my booze.

I, also, am going back to stock lower suspension arms. I got a new OEM set from Difatta recently that I was going to put on my daughter's car but her car's control arm bushings were still fine.

I have been running front and rear poly bushings on my lower front control arms for about 5 or 6 years but the conditions of the roads around here are getting so bad my teeth rattle. After driving Rosso and Quik Silver so much Originale will be going back to being truly originale at least on suspension arms.

Did you see the ebay listing for a 3 pak deal in Orlando all running?

See my post on it.

I can't even imagine what the wife would do to me if she found out that I bought 3 more Alfas. I would be dead! I guess I better get off my butt and finally head to the shop.

Converted to R134a

Well, nice day for it so I removed hoses, condensor, etc today and purged evaporator, condensor, and hoses with a/c cleaning solution and compressed air, Replaced expansion valve, receiver dryer and removed old R12 valve cores and installed NAPA R134a low and high pressure adapters.

I had already replaced compressor with a good one that had new shaft seal, clutch pulley bearing, and 6oz of ester oil.

Installed new green orings on fittings and hooked up everything, pulled vacumn on system. Then I charged sytems with 4 cans of freon and one can of dye. I got 35F air out of dash and proper low and high side pressures. so it looks like system a go for summer ahead.

I have been very happy with my 134 conversion on the 164. Now that I have a vacuum pump and everything I need, I will have to do the same to the old 240. Volvo sells a 134 conversion kit at a reasonable price, that will make that conversion a little easier than the 164 was, fortunately. Evaporator, receiver/dryer, main A/C hose with valve, exp. valve, complete o-ring kit, oil and decals for ~$285.

She's so lucky to have a Dad like you! I found out what it cost to "pay someone to do that stuff" right from the get go. It was well worth it, but after 30 years of exotic machinery, I finally went Lexus. Now I have to find my drama elsewhere. With the money that I save on Alfa repairs, I can afford to do that, but I still miss the tempermental diva!

I remember that so well. I traded a well worn 1980 264 cu in V8 Chevy El Camino even for a 86 GTV6 in 1999 from a car dealer. Car was brokered at Auto auction, etc but I tracked it back to second owner who had spent a ton of money on it. He said he finally sold it to get a Miata WITH A WARRANTY!

Yep...It's like being married to a sex symbol....Exciting, entertaining and beautiful, but after years of drama, a predictable engineer-type starts looking real attractive.
Now, I just check out the Alfas at car shows, then go home in the Lexus, knowing that it will get me there in time for dinner!

Reliability is soooo boring! Actually my 164 has been a very reliable mount, if it were not I would have sold it long ago. Sometimes you just have to invest deeply, the return on your investment is always worth it.
