Unless you are a checkbook mech then it is helpful! I had a conversation with neighborhood buds during happy hour today and one of them ask who I got to fix daughter's 164 a/c and weren't parts expensive. When I said I did it and my Alfa bud gave me compressor they were amazed as they don't even change their own oil.

I always get the comment "I bet that car costs a ton to keep running", to which I say "Not nearly as much as your BMW!" Then I say "If it is soooo unreliable then how did it get to 201,500 miles and counting?" By then they usually just shake there heads and walk away. Yes having mechanical knowledge helps in owning these cars, but they are no where near as bad as the crap that British Leyland put out in the, well pretty much the entire duration of their existence!

I agree, considering our 91 models were made in Feb and Mar of 1990 so going on 18 years old and still going and going with 195k and 155k plus miles on them is pretty amazing.
However, our 96 Jeep GC has 227K on it, too. I think pulling routine maintenance and doing those oil changes will make many a car last a long time. Bandaide or no repair or regular oil changes will do in even a 164 or a Jeep.
We still have original engines that have not had heads removed yet.

Can i use any r134a rated F type expansion valve for 164?? OEM expansion valves are ridiculously high compared to other OEM ones.
thanks,
-Pavan.

If you can find one the right size inlet and outlet with two tubes such as this Accura Integra or Saab 9000 EX6076C one shown in this site PBI_Acura_EX Click here: EX 6076C
They list Alfa but do not have a link to parts for it.
It looks close but whether 164 valve is same size or not I do not know. I think the 3/8" inlet and 1/2" outlet about the same. It has to have that extra small line with brass connector

No PAG oil is PAG oil and mineral spirits is mineral spirits - apples and oranges.
Which car are you fixing 91 or 95?
As for cleaning condensor and compressor did you have a failure of compressor if not I am not not sure you really need to clean condensor.
I would drain compressor and measure oil if any left in it and check condition of oil.
If 91 refill with about 5 oz of Ester oil but if 95 refill with PAG oil.
Use new green oring seals.
If you do want/need to clean condensor use special a/c system cleaning solution ands compressed air to flush out condensor.
Do you have vacumm pump and R134a gauge set, etc., to service system?

'm fixin my 93 with r134a. I haven't drained the oil yet from compressor. Also at the fittings of the pipes to condenser, do we have to use any special sealant?? I see some white stuff on the threads. I will get a set of green O-rings tonight and fix all the dings on the condenser fins (especially at the bottom where the condenser is open to road grit/dirt). I am no sure if the compressor is bad, the pulley runs freely with no noises coming out of the compressor. Also I am not sure if there are any leaks in compressor, if I have to check the leaks and fix them, where can I get those gaskets for it??
I will drain the old oil and fill it with Ester Oil. Do i need to clean the hoses?? I dont have a vacumm pump, but once everything is fixed and in place, I will take it for a vacumm test and recharge. I have a r134a gauge set.
thanks,
-Pavan.

Nothing special used on threads of fittings just be sure clean. No replaceable gaskets on compressor unless being overhauled by overhaul facility.
Shaft seal is replaceable if you have seal and tools to remove and install.
Clutch pulley bearing is replaceable.
Search 164 tab for my info on SD-709 compressor for more info and pictures.

Not unusual for it to be out of oil as oil moves throughout the system mixed with the freon but if Freon has leaked out over time oil does too.
Was compressor working and system had freon? Was it noisy? I suggest you fix leaks, change input shaft seal, add about 5 oz of ester oil reinstall compressor have system evacuated with vac pump, add dye and freon and check for leaks.
Use new receiver dryer along with expansion valve, too.

Does anyone have an idea of the total number of green o-rings that I need along with sizes??.. I have to replace rings at both in/out hose connections for condesor and at both connections on compressor along with drain plug and also two/three o-rings on filter/drier (I am not sure if the new filter come with O-rings on inlet/outlet and trinary switch) and I need two for inlet and outlet for expansion valve (here also I am not sure if the new one comes with green o-rings).
thanks,
-Pavan
