Ocassional Idle Problems

Hi,

Since most of the major issues have been addressed (except for the steering leak that is probably going to have to wait until spring) I'm starting to look into some of the more minor quirks of my 164. Since I bought it at the beginning of the year, it has ocassionaly done two things:

When starting from cold it will sometimes idle unevenly, bouncing between about 700 and 1200 RPMs. It usually does this when it is first started up, but sometimes it will idle fine for a few seconds and then do this. Eventually it evens out on its own. By searching this forum, I found other people that had a similar issue, but couldn't find where any of them figured out what was causing it. I've replaced the thermostat and inspected/cleaned all the connections but it still does this once in a while.

Most likely unrelated, sometimes after driving on the highway when I come to a stop it will idle extremely high, around 2,000 RPM. There is no bouncing here, it runs smoothly. I assume this is the throttle sticking or something along those lines, but I can never reproduce the problem in the driveway to verify. When it does happen, there is no way to get it "unstuck" such as tapping the accelorator etc. The only thing that works is turning off the car and restarting it right away which always solves the problem.

Any ideas what might be causing either of these? Also, am I potentially causing further damage by running the car with a leaky steering rack or high pressure hose if I just keep topping it up? I haven't had a chance to even see exactly where its leaking from- its 15 degrees outside and we there's over a foot of snow on the ground, no garage. Unless we get a December heat wave, its probably going to have to stay as is until March.

Thanks for your help!

Cold start idle issues sometimes just the nature of the beast but check the HIDDEN coolant temp sensor wiring connector and sensor terminals in mid housing under thermostat (not gauge sensor next to timing belt cover. Spray clean with contact cleaner and then pack with dielectric grease.

As for stuck idle when hot check for correctly adjusted and binding min/max 3-wire Bosch switch on front of throttle body. should click on/off in 0-1 degrees position.

when engine idling fast check that butterfly arm toching or not touch idel stop screw about where plastic cover over throttle bellcrank/cable is located.

If not against stop you have a binding switch.
