spoke toooooo sooooon
I spoke too soon, the bottom stud on the tensioner is stripped in the block it just turns either way... I guess the top bolt was holding the hold thing tight. there isnt enough thread to double nut, I tried a smallscrewdriver underneath the washer putting pressure and trying to back it out with no luck. wondering if a 2nd hole can be drilled and tapped if I cut the first stud off ? 2nd issue, I got to the back plugs and number 2 was filled with oil. I pulled the intake, broke 2 of the clamps around the intake runner's, that should not be a big deal... and 1 intake mounting stud looks like it was already broken...at the last service 43k ago they did show putting new oils seals in the spark plug holes, I take it that involves pulling the valve covers ? Any thoughts ? Jason prepare for a gasket order...LOL Robb

I guess my post last night did not take. Is stud loose in engine block or just nut spinning on stud? If nut just spinning:
Option A: If tensioner in good shape and if outer spring is not broken (not broken if pointer will only go below reference mark about 1/2") and end of stud has enough good threads to allow you to add washers above spinning nut to tighten new nut washers and spining nut against tensioner.
Option B: If tensioner outer spring broken and pointer will go way below reference mark then you need to somehow get spinning nut off stud. I would try with upper nut removed to get a forked wedge under tensioner body to force nut onto remaining threads on stud and see if you can't get it off.
Now if it will come off can you salvage enough threads to install spacer/washer set up to be able to tight new nut on remaining threads?
If you have to drill out stud and helicoil block to install new one BE SURE YOU HAVE STRUT AND SPRING ASSEMBLY and rear fender liner OUT OF THE WAY if not already removed so you get a clear area to work on the patient. I always remove them so I can set tensioner easier, too.

tensioner studs
OK,I got the lock nut off the bottom tensioner stud by Dremmel. I think I can clean the threads up on the stud but would rather use a new stud and new both top and bottom locking nuts... can anyone give me the size and thread for these or does anyone by chance have an extra I can purchase? Robb

Stud-tite (double ended stud) part #29203
This is what I got at autozone or one of the other chains and it fits just right but just a tad long. Don't forget loctite as well. Use the dimentions as printed on the packet if they don't carry the exact part.

You can use your Dremel or hacksaw to make a stud from a standard bolt from Ace Hardware or the like, just cut the head off. You can also use a grade 10.9 bolt that way, instead of an 8.8. With cheap Chinese fasteners it may be a good idea to go a grade higher. I noticed a placard at Ace the other day said (from the fastener company), metric fasteners marked 8.8 were considered equivalent to grade 5 (in a U.S. bolt) and those marked 10.9 equivalent to grade 8 (U.S.). Take note.

Here is a 210008062 M8X1.25 164 EXHAUST MANIFOLD stud that would be a good choice providing you can get old one out of engine block.
Alfa Parts Catalog - Alfa Romeo parts online store search by part number
I have a couple new ones left from head job we did recently. Shipping the killer but stud only $1.80. Overall length 1" with narrow area between threaded areas so it will bottom out in block and won't need but one bevel locking washer under nut.

I Found Napa part # 605-1347 water pump stud kit which gives 3 M8x 1.25 studs and nuts. I did get the old stud out no problem...now just waiting for gaskets for top end.

Need copy of jig for timing belt replacement
Steve,
Could you scan in the jig you made on your computer and save it as a pdf file? I could use it when I try my first timing belt & waterpump replacment. Thanks for all your help in the past.
