I hope JungleJustice can chime in here and help us out. My replies on other forum are under Mjkhpns.

Where's the thread? A link please...

I know that this is pretty basic stuff but maybe this will help Pat out;

BECAUSE of the inherent difficulty of the 164 design lay-out (versus that of say the conventionally-positioned Milano/GTV6 longitudinal lay-out), you have to kind-o follow a particular path when trying to trouble-shoot one of these cars! You can't simply pull a plug-wire and it is time-consuming to swap plugs!

You could just start replacing things, but that is not smart and costs MUCHO $$$ too.

Injectors towards the rear of the motor (3-6) and maybe 1 and 4 can be swapped between banks (without removing the intake setup)
Swapping the ignition-module leads is pretty simple too (hard to reach with big hands and arms though!)
Swapping coil-packs and/or plugs on the front bank (4-5-6) is a breeze!
Swapping ECU is also time-consuming and not likely the issue if the rest of the cylinders are firing! (I am still suspect of the ignition-modules)

Once you have done the plugs, the coil-packs the harness, the injectors etc it could STILL be one of those two modules!

In a nut-shell; what is the deal with this car now and what has been tried?

Hopefully his lead might help its as I said 24v inactive cyl in 164 discussion/164 tech;

http://www.digest.net/alfa/FAQ/164/b...ForumID2&omm=0

Have tried all you say except swapping injectors , sorry its a mind boggling thread but most of what I have posted has been tried.

In a nutshell is difficult but I have done all continuity tests and had it confirmed by someone else , the ECU HAS BEEN CHECKED AND IS ok , PLUGS AND COILS HAVE BEEN SWAPPED AND IGN MODULE PLUGS HAVE BEEN SWAPPED, (sorry not shouting , just my typing)basically the trigger for the spark at #5 is not working and only once have I got a spark there so something is intermittent but not spark since, Crank pulley was renewed but problem was there before so can rpm sensor at crank pulley be wrong?

Is the knock sensors can I test them, I assume they are the two sensors either end of the engine that have grey wires on them , they seem to be inacessable

I just came in on this problem so I am not up to speed on what has been tried. Have you checked to see if there is continuity at the #5 injector? You might have a poor connector at the injector socket. I can not see why a knock sensor would have to do with a dead cylinder. What is the compression on this cylinder? Curious minds want to know :P

Yeah, the knock-sensor DOES NOT effect any SINGLE cylinder...

Next step is to swap-out injectors between two holes. Since this is a middle hole, you will likely have to remove the intakes, AFM etc - take the time to do a compression check accross all cylinders!

Where the ignition harness connects to the wiring loom, I would check pin conductivity between the ends to see if there is a short in the harness. If you have continuity, then I would go from there, most likely back towards the ECU?

Yes I have done that check several times and even ran a wire from y/blk coil plug to past the multi conector and contiunity checks out
Checked back to ECU as well back to ign. modules..

Stupid question; did you hook up the noid light to the injector wire and see a flash...? IOW - did you check the injector itself yet?

Also, what was the compression for the other cylinders...?

I am in agreement with Junglejuice, did you swap out the injector or have them checked at a FI cleaning service? You might have a dead injector with a stuck pin. If it is stuck in the open position, then it is full flow all the time, which would be like what you are experiencing. Even if it is turning off and on, the pin is not moving. It only moves a miniscule amount of distance. If it is gummed up from age, then the rest are heading in the same direction as the one on #5 assuming this is the condition.
Last year as one of my steps to insuring reliability of my Q, I sent my injectors out for a cleaning. The injectors were cleaned, serviced and out in one day turn around. Money well spent.
